I was talking to someone about making banners and title images for games, and thought I’d share this process example to show one way of making light text against a light background legible.

In the first image, the yellow text is basically illegible against the light background, so I duplicated the text in a darker color and put it behind the yellow text. This is what you see in the middle image, and is much easier to read.

I thought there still wasn't quite enough separation between the text and the background, though, so I added a shadow effect behind the text. It’s really just a big blob at reduced opacity, but it does make quite a bit of difference in how legible the text is.

And that’s it! You basically just need to increase the contrast between the text and the background, and since they’re both light colors, using drop shadows does the trick.

Decadent Rem (WIP)

A work in progress of the character, Rem, in their flower coat. I it started around the time I began writing the game in which they appear. It’s based on Decadent Young Woman After the Dance by Ramon Casas.

You unfold the knife, revealing a blade of Damascus steel. The handle is inlayed with mother-of-pearl and a small red garnet which, when examined closely, appears to depict a shield severed by a jagged line.

As you turn the knife over in your hand, a faint shiver of energy runs up your arm and down your spine.

“Whatever this is,” you whisper, “it’s powerful.”

This knife was designed and drawn by @honeylemonbutte, one of the winners of a giveaway, and will be obtainable in later chapters!

Your hands lift it from its place in the [redacted]. You can only guess at how old it might be, how long it’s spent here locked away.

The mushroom’s cap glows softly as mycorrhizal filaments stretch from the bottom, wiggling like grasping fingers, like it’s aware it’s being held.

You watch the shifting colors, and a gentle warmth blooms in your chest, pulsing in time with the fungal light.
