Lore and History: People of Midland
The following are a few of the groups and cultures the player may encounter during their journey across Midland:
Magicians
The player character is a magician who practices Green Magic. Magicians serve a variety of functions in Midlandian society, depending on the particular school of magic in which they have specialized. Licensed magicians are the only folk granted access to unlimited magic from the ley lines.
The Magicians Order
The Magicians Order was founded over 600 years ago by the philosopher Viridian. Magicians' licenses, work contracts, and access to the magical ley lines are granted by the Magicians Order, and the organization holds a great deal of influence over Midland's economy, laws, and trade.
Wizards and Hedge Witches
Generally, anyone using magic outside of the official channels licensed by the Magicians Order may be referred to with these titles/descriptors. They are gender-neutral terms that can be used with reverence or pejoratively, depending on the speaker. Wizards and Hedge Witches use only ambient magic, which is weaker and much less concentrated than the magic found in the ley lines.
SolGuard Healers
SolGuard Healers are followers of the Sunkeepers, and practitioners of a religion worshipping the sun. Midland SolGuard are said to be the most powerful users of ambient magic, although their exact methods are closely guarded secrets.
The Sunkeepers
Sunkeepers hold the sun sacred, as well as the solar energy transfer throughout ecological systems. Members of the Sunkeepers go to great pains to protect existing ecological environments. This can sometimes cause them to butt heads with magicians, if they interpret magicians' actions as disruptive to the energy transfer structures they hold sacred.
In Midland, the majority of Sunkeepers follow a sect founded by the philosopher Foris, and so subscribe to his teachings regarding Shape Magic (which is viewed as disruptive and dangerous) and the necessity of secrecy concerning Sunkeeper technology.
There are Sunkeeper sects in other parts of the world who do not follow the teachings of Foris. These include the polar Sunkeepers, who travel between the world's poles to take advantage of the long growing seasons, and equatorial nomads, who travel around the world's equator, where the sun's rays are strongest.
Ralda's Eye
Taking their name from the popular Midlandian expletive, Ralda's Eye is an underground, anti-Magicians Order group. Its members have been known to illegally syphon magical energy from batteries and Order processing plants, and the group has taken to spreading pamphlets with anti-Order propaganda, causing the Order to regard them as an increasing nuisance.
Members of Ralda's Eye claim their philosopher namesake would have disapproved of the founding of the Order, and make use of her cryptic writings to criticize the Order's practices today.
